«Rotted Remnants Dripping from the Void» … wow, what a way to introduce your first album to the unsuspecting world. All but the very fearless and perhaps the very foolish would stay well away from a recording with a title like this! But if you want to enter the very weird and warped world of Barcelona trio Trollcave, you either do it through this album or the band’s previous work «Malforming Abominations from the Gloom Depths» which from the title alone doesn’t sound too reassuring either. Trollcave play a hybrid fusion of 1990s-styled doom / death metal slathered over with swamp slime and saliva in a dark cavernous underground corner of the universe where we enter at our peril.
The album plays very much like a trip into another dimension where conventional notions of time and space are abandoned, with two short and queasy Gothic ambient instrumental pieces, pretty much the same piece looping over and over, bookending the four long songs and acting like portals in and out of the Trollcave universe. The recording proper starts with «Fermented Rot Unlocks Hidden Pathways», a solid if slippery herpetological track of busy rolling percussion and majestic doom guitars with a filthy crusty grinding edge, topped by two duelling vocals, both heavily distorted and dripping with swamp weed and whatever unfortunate victim or victims the reptile vocalists just had for dinner. Sinister six-string melodies twist and entwine themselves into the crisp rhythms of the drumming which itself changes quite a lot and lays claim to being the highlight of the track. The varied pace of the song is another stand-out feature which influences the song’s mood and atmosphere and brings dread and horror into the already foetid surrounds.
