A collection of two demo’s from the first half of the 90’s, by US death metal commando Sapremia. Always nice, these kind of compilations, saves a lot of time hunting out obscure tapes from long ago.
Sapremia play a type of music that was typical for the US in those days. They would not sound out of place among bands like early Suffocation, Horror of Horrors, Embalmed (TX) or Torture Krypt, delivering quite the solid offering of death metal goodness. Relying primarily on sturdy riffing and solid percussion instead of flash and pizzazz, the band plow themselves through a collection of varied tracks that combine heavy, midtempo sections with faster parts. The riffing is solid and straight ahead, while the percussion moves from stomping and thudding to primitive blast beats, kinda like a sort of Obituary on steroids. The vocals keep it low and gruff, but maintain a bit of a thrash feel to it, reminding me somewhat of the vocalist of the Texan Devastation, but lower in execution. These elements all come together in a gruff and bulky sounding dose of death metal, where the influence of early Pestilence meets with old Cannibal Corpse and Obituary. It may perhaps not be the flashiest combo out there, but it goes down very well.
