Roots of the Old Oak are a trio from England, and “The Devil and His Wicked Ways,” while not an overt concept album, delves heavily into the context of paganism in the UK and resistance to the arrival of Christianity. You might find all of this interesting, but I suspect you’d rather read about what they sound like. Well, while not a carbon copy by any means, the two bands that came to mind when I listened to the album were one of my absolute favorites, Swedish occult deathsters and doom band Runemagick, as well as the slower, darker moments of Kings of Asgard.
If you like your metal to be slow, utterly and irredeemably miserable, and heavier than being crushed under many tons of self-help books, then this is the album for you. I for one loved the atmosphere and the unrepentant way in which the band decided to play on their own terms; I suspect they’d be happy if you understood it, but probably wouldn’t care too much if you didn’t. Safe, baroque, oppressive and utterly enjoyable.
