High on Fire fans rejoice: Blessed Black Wings is the band you know and fear. Albini’s influence is discreet and only serves to calcify the band’s laser-cut attack.
Atop Albini’s distended bottom, High on Fire are as toothy as they are searing. Previously, the band’s raw energy was trapped in a self-imposed dungeon of standard pessimism; on Blessed Black Wings, they have exploded, terrifying the masses with a sharper, snappier sound that will appeal to fans of Mastodon’s Leviathan.. But unlike Mastodon or progressive metal clairvoyants Converge, High on Fire don’t seem to be concerned in the least for the future; They are content to do what they do best, as long as there are subtle, unexplored patches of terrain to squat on.
