This is a question to wrestle with when listening to Sweden’s Consumption and their sophomore release Necrotic Lust.
On the band’s Facebook page they briefly describe themselves as “New Swedish 90’s UK Death Metal in the vein of Carcass,” and in their press release, dub Necrotic Lust “the album Carcass never made after Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious.” So, if it’s early-’90s Carcass you like, these nine tracks will tickle your nostalgia save for the vocals.
Comprised of guitarist/bassist/vocalist Håkan Stuvemark and drummer Jon Skäre, Consumption begin their tribute album with “Suffering Divine”. Following suit with the rest of the songs and Carcass’ style, it begins with a sample of foreboding dialogue. Once the band gets rolling, the similarities to Carcass are immediately recognizable, mainly the slimy guitar tones and ominous harmonies. As the song grinds forth, Stuvemark’s throaty growl is drowned out in the mix a bit. The issue is exclusive to this opening track, thankfully.
